Hello, and welcome to this new blog post! Which is simply going to be a compilation of free sewing patterns for whimsical dresses inspired by the fairycore aesthetic. All of these dresses are made with pockets (which is of the utmost importance to me when it comes to dresses). Of course, the pockets are optional, but if you don’t include them, I just have to ask: WHY?
Rest assured that I have many ideas for more dress sewing patterns. Especially a velvet dress that’s suitable for the cold. That will likely be my first dress design with sleeves. But still have pockets of course. Anyways, if you have any more ideas for fairycore dress sewing patterns you would like to see from me just let me know in the comments below!

1. Adjustable Tie-Front Dress
The first whimsical fairycore dress sewing pattern I have for you is this short strappy dress that has 3, yes 3, adjustable elements:
- Firstly the spaghetti straps have those metal adjusters usually found on bra straps.
- Next there is the tie-front detail on the bust.
- And, last but certainly not least, we have the shirred bodice that can grow (or shrink) with your body.
So that when you make this dress, you make something that you treasure and wear with comfort. And an assurance that this dress will flatter your body for years to come.
You can find the free sewing tutorial for the adjustable tie-front dress over here!
2. Asymmetrical Sundress with Adjustable Straps
At least I have finally created a dress with an asymmetrical handkerchief hem. You won’t believe just how long I’ve been thinking about it. What was really holding me back was the fact that I just couldn’t decide what kind of neckline/bodice would work best with that kind of skirt. Luckily inspiration struck as I was cutting out this asymmetrical circle skirt so now I know that I can sew adjustable bra cups and I can teach you to do that too. Instead of using elastics for the under bust and the waist I made drawstrings because the ribbons just look so cute. And drawstrings are a bit more adjustable than elastics which can wear out after a while (thanks to planned obsolescence).
You will find the step by step tutorial with pictures right here.

3. Satin Slip Dress with Organza Ruffles
Here is a more formal whimsical fairycore dress, perhaps for an outdoor dinner party on a warm summers night? Either way the shimmery satin and translucent ruffles are sure to dazzle no matter the occasion. According to conventional formalwear standards, this evening dress is relatively simple as it is a slip dress. And it’s also cut out on the bias for a teensy bit of stretch and drape. To give you more shape there are adjustable waist ties as well. And don’t forget the pockets of course!
You can find the free sewing pattern for the satin slip dress with organza ruffles right here.
4. Slip Mini Dress
This is a more casual version of a slip dress. Mostly because, instead of a shimmery satin, it’s made from a breathable cotton. Which means it’s easier to sew because it won’t slip around like satin, or other fancy fabrics, would. I also cut this dress out on the bias for that lovely drape from the slight stretch. This is the perfect fairycore dress to simply throw on over your swimsuit while you’re at the pool or beach.
The tie straps add an adjustable element that also looks cute. And the waist ties are optional in case you want to emphasise your waist (or not, it’s totally up to you at the end of the day).

5. Strappy Maxi Dress with French Seams
Here is a whimsical fairycore dress for you that also includes the slip pockets in the side seams. The waistband and straps of this maxi dress are also elasticated for extra comfort. I sewed this dress with French seams because, in addition to looking neat, they also prevent fraying at the seams. Which helps your sewing project to last for all the springs and summers ahead. At the bottom of the dress there is a ruffle for added fairycore flair as you dance around in sunlit meadows.

More Free Whimsical Sewing Patterns
First things first: the simple half circle skirt with pockets is made with the same fabric as the slip mini dress. And there is also the easy gathered skirt or tiered maxi skirt that both include pockets.
If skirts or dresses are too feminine for you, there’s always the free patterns for patchwork pants, simple shorts, or the summery trousers with ribbon side ties! All of those tutorials include elastic waistbands and pockets.
There is also the tutorial for flower cut-outs which are an easy way to upcycle an existing garment into something more whimsically fairycore.
