How to Crochet a Top with a Heart Cut-Out

Welcome to yet another free (insert sparkles) crochet pattern!!! I really like how varied all my crochet patterns are: first there were the Fairycore Flower Socks, then the Fairycore Flower Beanie, and now we have a strappy top with a heart cut-out. Almost a whole outfit. Emphasis on the almost haha. I do actually want to crochet a skirt but I want the skirt to be below knee length which means I would need to buy a lot of yarn. Currently I do not have the budget for that. But, let us move on shall we?

For this project I chose the colours purple and green. Doing more than one colour really emphasises the heart cutout. And also made it much easier to keep track of the rounds/rows I as I crocheted. But, of course, the colour scheme is totally up to you and I’m excited to see all the unique versions of this top. This pattern is most suitable for intermediate level crocheters. Please note that this pattern is written using US crochet terminology. It is a one size fits all (or possibly most) pattern. Throughout the tutorial, where it is possible to alter the pattern to change the size, I have left some tips. So good luck, have fun, and remember to share pictures of your finished crochet top!

You will need:

  1. 3.5mm crochet hook
  2. Approximately 135g of yarn
  3. Tapestry needle
  4. Stitch markers or safety pins(optional)

If you would like your top to be wider you can always crochet more of the decreasing rounds/rows until the top can cover your entire front.

How to Crochet the Sides of the Top

Make a slip knot and begin 6 stitches after the end of the green round. Make 1 SC then 27 HDC, 1 SC, 1 SS then turn around. (30 stitches total)

Row 2 – lavender yarn

Do 1 SS, 1 SC then 27 HDC, then 1 SC. (29 stitches total)

Rows 3-6

CH 1, then do 28 HDC and turn around. (28 stitches total)

Row 14 – lavender yarn

Do 15 DC, then 13 HDC, then Ch 1 and turn around. (28 stitches total)

Rows 15 – 21

Do 28 HDC, CH 1 and turn around. (28 stitches total) Here you can do more or less rows depending on the size you want your top to be.

Last Row

CH 1, skip the 1st stitch and then do 13 HDC, CH 1, skip the next stitch then do 12 HDC. Then CH 2, skip the last stitch and do 1 SS in the HDC of the previous row to make the last loop for the ties. Now you can finally end off.

If you want to make your straps wider then add an extra CH or two to each loop you make on the last row. Repeat all these steps for the other side of your top then all you need to do to finish it is crochet the straps.

How to Crochet the Straps

Row 1

Make a slip knot and begin at the back of the top where the loops are and create a border of SC. Continue until the front of the top where the lavender is and do 2 SC after the 2 HDC in 1 stitch. Then make approximately 250 CH for the straps. Please remember that the number of CHs depends on your personal preference but make sure it’s long enough to lace up the top when you’re wearing it and also be tied securely.

Row 2

Make another row of SC until the strap joins the front. In the images below you can see how you can join each row of the strap to the front of the top so it is secure.

Rows 3 & 4

Make another row of SC until the strap joins the front. If you want wider straps you can always repeat the rows of SC as many times as you want.

Make sure to do the strap for the other side of your top and then you can finally finish off by weaving in the ends after tying them securely!
