How to Crochet a (Disco) Ball – Free Pattern

Hello, and welcome to another free crochet pattern. This is my first crochet pattern that’s for a décor item, and it’s something you can make using a small amount of yarn (hello yarn scraps) pretty quickly. Perfect for a fun gift or even to sell! And this tutorial is a good start for crochet beginners looking to take their skills to the next level.

As you will see I used fairly thin yarn for my crochet disco ball, and the corresponding 3mm hook. But if you would like to experiment with making crochet spheres of different sizes one of the easiest ways to do that is by using a yarn of a different thickness, and a hook that’s suitable of course.

Abbreviations

Please note that I used a 3mm crochet hook and suitable yarn for that size. Also take note of the abbreviations that will be used:

• CH – chain
• SS – slip stitch
• SC – single crochet
• SC2TOG – crochet 2 single crochets together

You will need:

1. 3mm crochet hook
2. Some yarn that’s suitable for your crochet hook
3. Some kind of stuffing (NOT the food kind lol)
4. A tapestry needle
5. Scissors
6. Sequins
7. Hand sewing needle and thread (if you’re using sequins)
8. Rhinestones (an alternative to sequins)
9. Fabric glue (if you’re using rhinestones)

How to Crochet a Disco Ball

Round 1

Make a magic circle, CH 1, and then crochet 6 SC into the circle before closing with a SS.

Round 2

Now CH 1, then make 2 SC in each stitch from the previous round before closing with a SS. (12 stitches total)

Round 3

CH 1, *make 1 SC, then 2 SC both in the next stitch, and repeat from the * 5 times before closing with a SS. (18 stitches total)

Round 4

Then CH 1, *make 1 SC, then 2 SC both in the next stitch, then 1 SC, and repeat from the * 5 times before closing with a SS. (24 stitches total)

Round 5

Now CH 1, *make 3 SC , then 2 SC both in the 4th stitch, and repeat from the * 5 times before closing with a SS. (30 stitches total)

Round 6

CH 1, *make 2 SC, then 2 SC both in the 3rd stitch, another 2 SC, and repeat from the * 5 times before closing with a SS. (36 stitches total)

Rounds 7-13

Simply CH 1, then make 36 SC, before closing with a SS.

Round 14

Then CH 1, *make 2 SC, SC2TOG, then 2 SC, and then repeat from the * 5 times before closing with a SS. (30 stitches total)

Round 15

Now CH 1, *make 3 SC, then SC2TOG, and then repeat from the * 5 times before closing with a SS. (24 stitches total)

Round 16

Make CH 1, *make 1 SC, then SC2TOG, another 1 SC, and then repeat from the * 5 times before closing with a SS. (18 stitches total)

Round 17

CH 1, *make 1 SC, then SC2TOG, and then repeat from the * 5 times before closing with a SS. (12 stitches total)

Round 18

Then CH 1, and make 6 SC2TOG, before closing with a SS. (6 stitches total)

Now’s the time for the stuffing!

Just take your stuffing, whether it’s proper plushie stuffing, old stuffing from a duvet or pillow, or even scraps of thread/yarn/fabric, and roll it into a ball. Then insert the ball into your crochet ball/sphere. Add more stuffing if you so desire until your ball is full, just make sure it’s not too full.

How to close your crochet ball/sphere

1. Cut your yarn, making sure to leave a long (and I mean long) tail.
2. Take a tapestry needle and thread your yarn tail through it.
3. Insert your needle into the front loop of the next stitch in the round.
4. Repeat Step 3 in the following stitches, until you reach the part where you started inserting your needle into the stitches.
5. This is optional in case you can to crochet a loop from which to hang your crochet disco ball. Simply make some chains (using your hook once again), until you reach your desired loop length.
6. Pull your yarn tightly, and then insert your needle into the middle of the sphere and pull it through.
7. Now you can cut off the extra yarn, tug at the sealed base to get it to lay nicely, and you have created your very own crochet ball/sphere!

And now you can either use a regular needle and thread to sew sequins onto your crochet sphere to transform it into a disco ball, or use some glue to stick rhinestones on it.
