Hello, and welcome to another free pattern. This one is for the spring/summer and its a crochet sun hat with a flower design on the crown. This hat is currently one size, but I could be persuaded to do more sizes if there are requests. You could also use a different yarn thickness and crochet hook size in order to get a different hat size. The circumference of the crown of the flower sun hat is approximately 62cm/24.4 inches.
I totally lost track of how many times I redid this hat, particularly the flower part. But I also redid the brim since it was just not at the correct angle. For me at least. I used a cotton yarn for this project since I try to use natural fibres whenever possible. This yarn is basically the same texture as string, which means that is wasn’t the easiest to work with since it’s not soft nor very flexible. But I actually think that stringy yarn is best for crochet projects such as hats or bags that benefit from being more structured. As always though, it’s totally up to you what kind of yarn you would like to use. I will say that this stringy yarn definitely put more strain on my hands, just to warn you. But overall I’m quite pleased with the result and I’m glad to finally show it to you since I had (more than) a few setbacks while working on it.

You will need:
- 4.5mm crochet hook
- Approximately 300g of yarn
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers (optional)

- CH – chain
- SS – slip stitch
- SC – single crochet
- HDC – half double crochet
- DC – double crochet
- DC2TOG – make 2 double crochet together/double crochet decrease
How to Crochet a Flower Sun Hat
How to Crochet the Crown of the Flower Sun Hat
Round 1
Make a magic circle, CH 1, then make 9 HDC inside the circle and close with a SS.
Round 2
Make 5 CHs, *skip 1 stitch, then make 1 HDC in the next stitch, then CH 4. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then close with 1 SS in the 3rd chain from the beginning of the round.
Round 3
In the CH space from Round 2, * crochet 1 HDC, then 2 DC, then 1 HDC. Then make 1 SS in the HDC from Round 2. Repeat from the * 4 more times, then close with a SS, and then cut off the excess yarn and end off.
Round 4
Make a slip knot and pull it through the chain between the 2 DC from Round 3. Then CH 2 then crochet 4 DC in the stitch. *CH 3 then do 4 DC in the next space between the 2 DC from Round 3. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 3 and close the round with a SS. The DC are the beginning of the flower petals. (35 stitches total)
Round 5
CH 2 (this counts as a DC stitch), then crochet another DC in the same stitch, then do 1 DC in each of the following 2 stitches, and in the next stitch crochet 2 DC. Then *CH 4, and in the next flower petal, do 2 DC in 1 stitch, then do 1 DC in each of the following 2 stitches, and in the next stitch crochet 2 DC. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 4 and close the round with a SS. (50 stitches total)
Here is a close up view of the 2 CH and the DC in the same stitch you must do at the beginning of Rounds 5-8.
Round 6
CH 2, then crochet another DC in the same stitch, then do 1 DC in each of the following 4 stitches, and in the next stitch crochet 2 DC. Then *CH 3, and in the next flower petal, do 2 DC in 1 stitch, then do 1 DC in each of the following 4 stitches, and in the next stitch crochet 2 DC. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 3 and close the round with a SS. (55 stitches total)
Round 7
CH 2, then crochet another DC in the same stitch, then do 1 DC in each of the following 6 stitches, and in the next stitch crochet 2 DC. Then *CH 2, and in the next flower petal, do 2 DC in 1 stitch, then do 1 DC in each of the following 6 stitches, and in the next stitch crochet 2 DC. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 2 and close the round with a SS. (60 stitches total)
Round 8
CH 2, then crochet another DC in the same stitch, then do 1 DC in each of the following 8 stitches, and in the next stitch crochet 2 DC. Then *CH 1, and in the next flower petal, do 2 DC in 1 stitch, then do 1 DC in each of the following 8 stitches, and in the next stitch crochet 2 DC. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 1 and close the round with a SS. (65 stitches total)
Round 9
CH 2, then crochet 1 DC in each of the following 8 stitches. Then DC2TOG.
*CH 4, then, in the next petal, make 1 DC2TOG, then 1 DC in each of the following 8 stitches, then another DC2TOG. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 4 and close the round with a SS. (70 stitches total)
Round 10
CH 2, then do 1 DC in each of the following 6 stitches, and crochet DC2TOG. Then *CH 7, and in the next flower petal, do 1 DC2TOG, then 1 DC in each of the following 6 stitches, then another DC2TOG. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 7 and close the round with a SS. (75 stitches total)
Round 11
CH 2, then do 1 DC in each of the following 4 stitches, and crochet DC2TOG. Then *CH 10, and in the next flower petal, do 1 DC2TOG, then 1 DC in each of the following 4 stitches, then another DC2TOG. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 10 and close the round with a SS. (80 stitches total)
Round 12
CH 2, then do 1 DC in each of the following 2 stitches, and crochet DC2TOG. Then *CH 12, and in the next flower petal, do 1 DC2TOG, then 1 DC in each of the following 2 stitches, then another DC2TOG. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 12 and close the round with a SS. (80 stitches total)
Round 13
CH 2, then do 1 DC2TOG. Then *CH 15, and in the next flower petal, do 2 DC2TOG. Repeat from the * 3 more times, then CH 15 and close the round with a SS. (85 stitches total)
Now the crown of your crochet flower sun hat is complete so you can move on to the brim of the hat.

Round 14
CH 1, then make 8 SC, then 2 SC in 1 stitch, repeat from the 8 more times. Then make 1 SC, and close the round with a SS. (91 stitches total)
Round 15
CH 1, then make 91 SC and then close the round with a SS.
Round 16
CH 1, *then make 9 SC, then 2 SC in 1 stitch, repeat from the *8 more times. Then make 1 SC, and close the round with a SS. (100 stitches total)
Round 17
CH 1, then make 100 SC and then close the round with a SS.
Round 18
CH 1, *then make 10 SC, then 2 SC in 1 stitch, repeat from the *8 more times. Then make 1 SC, and close the round with a SS. (109 stitches total)
Round 19
CH 1, then make 109 SC and then close the round with a SS.
Round 20
CH 1, *then make 11 SC, then 2 SC in 1 stitch, repeat from the *8 more times. Then make 1 SC, and close the round with a SS. (118 stitches total)
Round 21
CH 1, then make 118 SC and then close the round with a SS.
Round 22
CH 1, *then make 12 SC, then 2 SC in 1 stitch, repeat from the *8 more times. Then make 1 SC, and close the round with a SS. (127 stitches total)
Round 23
CH 1, then make 127 SC and then close the round with a SS.
Round 24
CH 1, *then make 13 SC, then 2 SC in 1 stitch, repeat from the *8 more times. Then make 1 SC, and close the round with a SS. (136 stitches total)
Round 25
CH 1, then make 136 SC and then close the round with a SS.
If you would like to make the brim of your hat wider you can continue increasing the stitches every 2nd row until you are happy with the result.
