Hello, and welcome to, as the title says, the Ultimate Guide for FREE leaf crochet patterns. In this guide you’ll find tutorials for simple and easy leaves, as well as ideas for variations of leaf garlands. I will be using the same yarn and crochet hook to demonstrate all the leaf variations but these crochet patterns will work for a range of yarn/hook sizes. You just need to experiment to find the correct size for your project. Of course, you can crochet leaves in many more colours than green, especially if you have a more whimsical sense of style. There are also different leaf types such as the monstera, maple, and ivy. You can use crochet leaves for many different projects, such as making garlands or vines, or sewing your leaves as appliqué onto clothes, or whatever your imagination conjures up.
This guide is by no means complete and I’m sure I’ll find more leaf crochet patterns to add to it in the future. I plan to make some more free crochet patterns for the more complex leaves such as the fern, too. In any case, feel free to comment below with any leaf crochet pattern ideas that I may have missed! I used a 3mm crochet hook and suitable yarn for that size for all of the crochet leaf tutorials in this post.

How to Crochet the Simple Leaf
This is the easiest leaf to crochet. The last step is a variation to create a slightly different look and is optional.
Step 1
Make a slip knot and do 10 CH.
Step 2
In the 2nd chain from your hook, make 1 SC. Then make 1 HDC, 1 DC, 2 DC in 1 stitch, 1 TR, 2 DC in 1 stitch, 1 DC, 1 HDC, then end the row with 1 SC. (9 stitches total)
Step 3
Now turn your leaf make make the following stitches on the other side to mirror the row from Step 2: 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 DC, 2 DC in 1 stitch, 1 TR, 2 DC in 1 stitch, 1 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC, then close with 1 SS. Now you can end off and weave in the ends of the yarn (unless you want to do Step 4 of course).
Step 4
Now you can crochet a line of 9 SS in the centre of your leaf. This is totally optional though. After you have completed the slip stitches you can weave in the ends of your yarn.
How to Crochet the Tiny Leaf
As the title suggests, this is a small version of the Simple Crochet Leaf. The last step is a variation to create a slightly different look and is optional.
Step 1
Make a slip knot and do 6 CH.
Step 2
In the 2nd chain from your hook, make 1 SC. Then make 2 HDC in 1 stitch, 1 DC, 2 HDC in 1 stitch, then end the row with 1 SC. (5 stitches total)
Step 3
Now turn your leaf and make the following stitches on the other side to mirror the row from Step 2: 1 SC, 2 HDC in 1 stitch, 1 DC, 2 HDC in 1 stitch, 1 SC, then close with 1 SS. Now you can end off and weave in the ends of the yarn (unless you want to do Step 4 of course).
Step 4
Now you can crochet a line of 5 SS in the centre of your leaf. This is totally optional though. After you have completed the slip stitches you can weave in the ends of your yarn.
How to Crochet the Wide Leaf
Steps 1-3
Follow the same steps as written for the Simple Crochet Leaf.
Step 4
Now make 1 CH, then 2 SC, 2 HDC, 1 DC, 2 DC in 1 stitch, 2 DC, 2 HDC, then end with 1 SC.
Step 5
CH 1 and then repeat the stitches from Step 4 in reverse order: 1 SC, 2 HDC, 2 DC, 2 DC in 1 stitch, 1 DC, 2 HDC, 2 SC, then end off with a SS.
Step 7
This is also optional, but you can do some SS down the centre of your leaf as well before weaving in your yarn ends.
How to Crochet the Long Leaf
This leaf tutorial is simply a variation on the simple leaf tutorial just with more chains/stitches.
Step 1
Make a slip knot and do 16 CH.
Step 2
In the 2nd chain from your hook, make 1 SC. Then make another SC in the next chain, then 2 HDC, 3 DC, 1 TR, 3 DC, 2 HDC, then 2 SC. (15 stitches total)
Step 3
Now turn your leaf and make the following stitches on the other side to mirror the row from Step 2: 2 SC, 2 HDC, 3 DC, 1 TR, 3 DC, 2 HDC, 2 SC, then close with 1 SS. Now you can end off and weave in the ends of the yarn (unless you want to do Step 4 of course).
Step 4
Now you can crochet a line of 15 SS in the centre of your leaf. This is totally optional though. After you have completed the slip stitches you can weave in the ends of your yarn.
How to Crochet the Monstera Leaf
This leaf is intricate with its gaps, and more complicated than the simple leaf.
Step 1
Make a slip knot and do 20 CH.
Step 2
In the 2nd chain from your hook, make 1 SS. Then make 1 SC, 2 HDC in 1 stitch, 1 SC, 2 SS, 1 SC, then CH 6.
Step 3
Remove your crochet hook and insert it into the 3rd stitch from Step 2, and pull through the loop of the 6 chains. Then CH 1.
Step 4
Now make 6 HDC and 1 SC in the 6 chain space, and then join it to the main chain using a SS.
Step 5
CH 7, then remove your hook and insert it into the 3rd stitch from Step 4, and pull through the loop of the 7 chains. Then CH 1.
Step 6
Now make 1 HDC, 10 DC, 1 HDC, then skip 1 chain then make 1 SC to join it back to the main chain.
Step 7
Make 1 HDC, then 1 DC, then CH 11, then remove your hook and insert it into the 3rd stitch from Step 6, and pull through the loop of the 11 chains. Then CH 1.
Step 8
Crochet 1 HDC, then 13 DC, make 2 HDC in the DC from Step 7, then skip 1 stitch and join it to the main chain with a SS.
Step 9
Make 1 HDC, then CH 10, then remove your hook and insert it into the 9th stitch from Step 8, and pull through the loop of the 10 chains. Then CH 1.
Step 10
Do 1 HDC, then 10 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC, then 1 SS in the HDC from Step 9.
Step 11
Now make 16 SS in what will be the centre of the monstera leaf.
Step 12
Repeat Steps 2-10 to form the other half of your leaf.
Step 13
If you like you can make 3 SC in the remaining 3 chains in order to form a stem. And your crochet monstera leaf is complete!
How to Crochet a Heart-shaped Leaf
The dimensions of this leaf are 3.4 by 3cm or 1.3 by 1.2 inches.
Round 1
Make a magic circle, CH 2 (this counts as first DC), then make 2 DC, 3 HDC, CH 1, 1 DC, CH 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC in the circle. Lastly, make 1 SS in the circle as well.
Round 2
Turn your work so you will create the stitches in the opposite direction of Step 1. Then skip the 1st stitch and make 2 SC in 1 stitch. Make another 2 SC in the next stitch, then 2 HDC in the stitch after that. Crochet 3 HDC, then make 1 HDC, CH 1, 1 HDC in the chain space from Round 1. Then make 3 HDC, 2 HDC in 1 stitch, 2 SC in each of the next 2 stitches. Make 1 SS, then another SS in the DC from the previous round, then finish off with another SS in the circle. And your crochet heart-shaped leaf is complete. You can either weave in your yarn ends now or make some chains for a stem.
How to Crochet an Ivy Leaf
Step 1
Make 3 CH, then make 9 HDC in the 2 loops of the 1st chain, then close with a SS to the 3rd chain.
Step 2
CH 3, make 1 SS in the 2nd chain from your hook, then make 1 DC in the next stitch and then CH 1. In the next stitch make 1 SS.
Step 3
In the next stitch make 1 HDC, then 1 DC in the same stitch. CH 2 then make 1 SS in the 2nd chain from your hook. Then make another DC and HDC in the same stitch. In the next stitch make 1 SS.
Step 4
Make 1 SC, 1 HDC, and 2 DC in the next stitch. CH 2 then make 1 SS in the 2nd chain from your hook. Then make 2 DC, 1 HDC, and 1 SC in the same stitch as well. In the next stitch make 1 SS.
Step 5
Repeat Step 3.
Step 6
In the next stitch, make 1 HDC and 1 DC, then CH 1 and then make 2 SS in the DC stitch. Then make 1 SS in the last stitch of the circle from step 1. Now you can end off or you can crochet some more chains for a stem.
How to Crochet a Maple Leaf
The dimensions of this leaf are 8.5cm/3.3 inches long and 9cm/3.5 inches at the widest part.
Round 1
Make a magic circle, then make 6 SC in it, then close with a SS.
Round 2
Step 1
Make 1 SS in the next stitch, then CH 2. *Insert your hook into the 2rd chain from your hook, YO and pull through so you have 2 loops on your hook. Then YO and pull through those 2 loops. Repeat from the * 7 more times (8 in total) then CH 1. Make 1 SC in each of the following 8 stitches, then join this “leaf” to the circle using a SS.
Step 2
Make 1 SS in the next stitch, then CH 2. *Insert your hook into the 2rd chain from your hook, YO and pull through so you have 2 loops on your hook. Then YO and pull through those 2 loops. Repeat from the * 10 more times, then CH 1 and make 10 SC on the other side, then join this “leaf” to the circle using a SS.
Step 3
Make 1 SS in the next stitch, then CH 2. *Insert your hook into the 2rd chain from your hook, YO and pull through so you have 2 loops on your hook. Then YO and pull through those 2 loops. Repeat from the * 12 more times, then CH 1 and make 11 SC on the other side, then join this “leaf” to the circle using a SS.
Step 4
Make 1 SS in the next stitch, then CH 2. *Insert your hook into the 2rd chain from your hook, YO and pull through so you have 2 loops on your hook. Then YO and pull through those 2 loops. Repeat from the * 10 more times, then CH 1 and make 10 SC on the other side, then join this “leaf” to the circle using a SS.
Step 5
Make 1 SS in the next stitch, then CH 2. *Insert your hook into the 2nd chain from your hook, YO and pull through so you have 2 loops on your hook. Then YO and pull through those 2 loops. Repeat from the * 7 more times (8 in total) then CH 1. Make 1 SC in each of the following 7 stitches, then join this “leaf” to the circle using a SS.
Step 6 – maple leaf stem
Make 1 SS in the next stitch, then CH 8. Do 1 HDC in the 2nd chain from your hook, then 1 SC in each of the next 5 stitches. Then make another SS to join the stem to the circle.
Round 3
Step 1 – bottom right part of maple leaf
Crochet 1 SC in the stitch after the SS from the stem, then make 1 HDC, 1 DC, and 1 TR. CH 3 then do 1 SC in the same stitch as the TR. Now crochet 3 SC, 2 SS, CH 2, make 3 SS, then 2 SC.
*Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through. Repeat from the * until you have 4 loops on your hook. Now YO and pull through 2 of those loops. Insert your hook into the first stitch of the next leaf section, YO and pull through. Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through again. Now YO and pull through 2 of the loops on your hook. Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through. You should now have 5 loops on your hook so YO and pull through all of them. Step 2 – top right part of maple leaf
In the next stitch make 1 SC, then 1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 TR. CH 3 then make 1 SC in the same stitch as the TR. Now crochet 2 SC, then 2 SS, CH 2, then do 2 SS, and then 3 SC. CH 3 again and then do 1 TR in the same stitch as the last SC. Now, in the following 3 stitches, make 1 DC, 1 HDC, and then 1 SC.
*Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through. Repeat from the * 2 more times until you have 4 loops on your hook. Now YO and pull through 2 of those loops. Insert your hook into the first stitch of the next leaf section, YO and pull through. Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through again. Now YO and pull through 2 of the loops on your hook. Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through. You should now have 5 loops on your hook so YO and pull through all of them. Step 3 – middle part of maple leaf
Do 1 HDC in each of the following 4 stitches, then 1 DC, then 1 TR. CH 3 and then crochet 1 SC in the same stitch as the TR. Do 2 more SC, then 2 SS. CH 2, then make 2 SS, then 2 SC. CH 3 and then do 1 TR in the same stitch as the last SC. Then crochet 1 DC, then 3 HDC.
*Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through. Repeat from the * 2 more times until you have 4 loops on your hook. Now YO and pull through 2 of those loops. Insert your hook into the first stitch of the next leaf section, YO and pull through. Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through again. Now YO and pull through 2 of the loops on your hook. Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through. You should now have 5 loops on your hook so YO and pull through all of them. Step 4 – top left part of maple leaf
Make 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 TR, then CH 3 and do 1 SC in the same stitch as the TR. Crochet 2 more SC, then 2 SS. CH 2, then do 2 SS, 3 SC. CH 3 then make 1 TR in the same stitch as the last SC. In the following stitches do 1 DC, 1 HDC, and 1 SC.
*Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through. Repeat from the * 2 more times until you have 4 loops on your hook. Now YO and pull through 2 of those loops. Insert your hook into the first stitch of the next leaf section, YO and pull through. Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through again. Now YO and pull through 2 of the loops on your hook. Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull through. You should now have 5 loops on your hook so YO and pull through all of them. Step 5 – bottom left part of maple leaf
Make 2 SC, then 3 SS, CH 2, then 1 SS in each of the following 2 stitches, then 3 SC. CH 3 then make 1 TR in the same stitch as the last SC you made. Now in the following stitches do 1 DC, then 1 HDC, 1 SC and then end off with 1 SS.
