How to Make Fairycore Fondants with Natural Green Food Dye

Hello, and welcome to another fairycore dessert recipe! This recipe blog post is actually a 2 in 1 since it combines 2 easy recipes. I got the recipe for the natural green food dye from a blog called Sew Historically, and you can find the link to the specific blog post here. If the hyperlink isn’t working please let me know so I can fix it.

I also included an easy recipe for (vegan) fairycore fondants with this natural food colouring so you have an idea of what to make with it. If and when I make something else with it I will be sure to make a post about it, don’t you worry. In the meantime, if any of you feel inspired to experiment with the natural green food dye, please let the rest of us know how it went! And thank you very much in advance!

But, without further ado, here are your 2 recipes…

Ingredients for Natural Green Food Dye

  1. 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
  2. 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  3. 2 cups water

How to Make Natural Green Food Dye

Step 1

Place the seeds, bicarb, and water in a pot and place on the stove until the mixture is boiling. Then let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes, making sure that it doesn’t bubble over.

Step 2

Drain the sunflower seeds, and spread out on a flat surface such as a large plate so that they can air dry. Depending on your climate, this may take up to and over 24 hours. As the seeds dry most of them will turn into a dark green.

Step 3

Once the seeds are dry you can use a blender to grind them up into a (slightly moist) powder. If your blender isn’t very good (like mine) you may still have some chunkier seed pieces you can sift the powder to remove them, and this is your natural green food dye.

I would recommend that you use your natural food dye as soon as possible after making it. But if you have some left over like I did I would recommend putting it into an airtight container and freezing it.

Ingredients for (Vegan) Fairycore Fondants

  1. 300ml icing sugar plus extra for dusting
  2. 50ml of the sifted Natural Green Food Colouring
  3. 2-3 tablespoons of water

How to Make (Vegan) Fairycore Fondants

This recipe yielded about 23 butterflies for me.

Step 1

Sift the icing sugar into a mixing bowl and add your homemade natural green food colouring as well as the water. Stir to combine. The mixture should form into a dough so you may also need to use your (CLEAN) hands.

Step 2

Roll out your sugary dough onto an icing sugar dusted surface and use a cookie cutter to cut it out into shapes (I used a butterfly!). If you don’t have any cookie cutters you can simply divide your mixture into little balls and squash them with a fork. Repeat until all your dough is made into little shapes. Then leave them out overnight so they can crisp up. Store in an airtight container for a few days.
