Fairycore Decor Ideas

Hello, and welcome to this blog post where you will find 10 Fairycore Decor Ideas. These are whimsical, dreamy, often (but not always) feminine ways to decorate your home. From the kitchen to the bathroom to your bedroom, you can transform your house into a fairycore sanctuary. These ideas range from affordable to really not so affordable but they can also be inspiration for future DIY projects. And also inspiration for future posts on this blog.

1. Botanical Posters

An essential aspect of fairycore is obviously nature. And while there are many ways, some of which will be mentioned further along in this post, these illustrated posters are the most low maintenance when it comes to nature themed fairycore decor ideas. At least when it comes to indoor decorating.

Personally, I have yet to get a poster like this even though I’ve been obsessed with them ever since I became aware of their existence. They are both lovely to look at and, when the illustrations are labelled, provide educational value too!

Of course, you can choose posters with illustrations of flowers, fruits, vegetables, or anything else you can make or find. It’s perhaps a good idea to laminate them so that the poster can’t be torn or damaged by the elements. But, as always, it’s completely up to you.

2. Candles

The romantic ambiance of candles is unrivaled, except when it comes to safety, of course. But candles don’t necessarily have to be lit to be part of the fairycore decor aesthetic. But they are certainly practical when there is an unexpected power cut!

Candles these days come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colours. But if you are a fairy on a budget there are always those simple white supermarket candles instead of all those fancy scented and uniquely shaped ones. Obviously the latter is far more fun but at least this is a decor idea that can be done relatively cheaply.

3. Chandeliers

Usually I would be one to say that ceiling lights are complete and utter ruiners of atmosphere, but, there is (almost) always an exception to every rule.

And the exception to the ceiling light rule is…you guessed it, chandeliers! They are the marriage of the practicality of a ceiling light to sparkling frippery. Just keep in mind that those bright white light LED bulbs are perhaps not the most ideal choice when it comes to enhancing the atmosphere of a crystal chandelier light fixture.

While they are hardly the most budget friendly fairycore decor idea they do add a touch of glamour. And make you feel like the fairy princess that you are!

4. Fairy Lights

Rest assured here comes a more budget friendly fairycore decor idea when it comes to lighting. Fairy Lights! These are available in so many colours and shapes nowadays you’ll be spoiled for choice! And, unlike candles, there’s no risk of a fire hazard. Depending on the design, fairy lights can be hung from the ceiling or on walls or even draped over furniture or curtain rails.

5. Stained Glass Lampshades

While these lampshades certainly aren’t on the affordable side they are just SO pretty whether they are on or not. I’m totally obsessed with them as they are yet another way to avoid the ongoing problem of harsh ceiling lights. Especially if you are in a rental and can’t just swap the plain ceiling lights for a chandelier. The possibilities of shape and colour are just endless when it comes to stained glass. However, most of the designs I have seen online incorporate elements from nature such as leaves and flowers. Which is just perfect for fairycore decor.

6. Lace Curtains

Curtains that are made of lace, or some other kind of semi-transparent, gauzy fabric are perfect for when you want privacy but also a dreamy aesthetic in your home. They let in light but prevent anyone outside from seeing into the room because, during daytime at least, outside is brighter than inside a house. Of course, it’s important to remember that once you have a light on inside, lacy or gauzy curtains won’t provide much privacy.

There are so many different patterns of lace, from flowers to birds to anything you can think of that falls under the fairycore aesthetic. And some lace even has glittery threads used in it which further emphasises the whimsical, otherworldly effect.

7. Mirrors

Another practical yet oh so fairycore decor idea is a mirror. Or rather, mirrors. Since most homes have at least two mirrors if I recall correctly. As always I would recommend a vintage mirror but these days most stores have vintage inspired mirrors as well. Especially those mirrors with ornate gold or silver frames. Mirrors brighten up your space by reflecting light and also have their every day uses such as being there so you can check your hair or teeth. Or just to admire yourself. They also come in a variety of sizes, from those full length mirrors perfect for selfies to the small mirror with it’s own stand included in this blog post. So whatever your budget or living situation is, you can (probably) still get yourself a mirror!

8. Houseplants

Plants bring a real life piece of nature into your home. There are so many varieties of plants that can survive indoors: from herbs to vines to succulents. Succulents are especially ideal if you want something that’s easy to keep alive. You can even keep some plants in your shower as they will appreciate the humidity. Common types of plants that do well indoors include monstera, aloe vera, fiddle leaf fig, golden pothos, the snake plant, and many more. The snake plant is especially good removing toxic pollutants and is one of the few plants that can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen at night. Just be careful if you have any pets as some houseplants can actually be poisonous for them to eat. Pothos and aloe vera are just two examples of such houseplants.

Plants can also be obtained relatively cheaply if you know how to propagate them. Propagation involves cutting a small piece of an existing plant and keeping it in water until roots form. That’s the simplest way to explain it but it’s not always as easy as it sounds, trust me! Otherwise I’m sure your local nursery would appreciate the support.

9. Suncatchers

Suncatchers are the perfect piece to hang in a window or doorway that gets a lot of sun. When the sunlight hits the crystal it will refract into little spots of rainbow all over the room. They are truly magical and I treasure mine. They are purely decorative and serve no other purpose than bringing joy.

I’m sure that these glass crystals are pretty cheap to buy and you can use ribbon or string or twine to hang them up.

My suncatcher was a gift from a family friend and I personally love that it’s just a bit of fishing wire and the glass crystal. The translucent fishing wire makes it appear to be a sparkly ball just floating in midair. You can’t get much more fairycore than that!

10. Vintage Furniture

Nowadays most furniture tends to be plastic disguised as wood, and flimsy wood at that. Most of the appeal is the low price of course, and the fact that plastic furniture is lighter in weight than wood. The latter is understandable, while the former is just tragic necessity. However, if you are able to treat your purchases of furniture as investment pieces, then vintage is the way to go when it comes to fairycore decor especially. The various shades of brown bring a bit of the natural world into your home and so many vintage pieces tend to have intricate carvings or metalwork that add depth.

Of course, when you are on a budget and shopping second hand you might come across some wooden furniture that is quite scruffy. But, if you have the time, money, and patience you can always sand it down and give it a makeover. Maybe even paint it a more unusual colour, such as green perhaps. I have a bookshelf that I painted green when I was a teenager and I still cherish it to this day!

Where to Shop for Fairycore Decor

I won’t apologise to those who are disappointed in the lack of Amazon referral links in this blog post. These days Google image search is just a click or a tap away. When I have a small business to share I most certainly will. Even if I personally haven’t bought from them. But you’re all smart enough to find places to buy fairycore decor yourselves. Who knows, instead of buying something hundreds of other people have bought, you can purchase something unique and also support an artisans dream.

Firstly, I would strongly recommend that, when DIY is not an option for whatever reason, that you buy secondhand. It’s just better for our planet and you can often find so many unique items that way. Especially vintage pieces.

That being said, sometimes you just can’t find what you need at the secondhand store. So that’s when I would look for artisans that have their own small business and see if I can support them. I wish I could say that I’ll never buy anything that has been mass produced again but I’m also trying to be realistic here.

At the end of the day you’re the expert on your own life and you’re free to live it however you wish. Just try to avoid impulse purchases as much as you can. As fun as it can be in the moment, it’s just not sustainable long term for you or our planet.
